Blown render is render that has lost its bond with the wall behind. It often looks fine — the giveaway is a hollow sound when tapped, and hairline cracks that let water in behind the coat. Once water gets behind, frost does the rest, and the failed area spreads outward every winter.
Repair starts with a hammer survey to map exactly how far the debonding runs, because it is almost always larger than the visible damage. We cut back to sound, well-bonded render, rake and key the edges, apply a bonding agent, and rebuild in matching coats with mesh across the join. Then we work out why it failed — a leaking gutter, a bridged DPC, a cracked sill, missing beads — because patching the symptom without fixing the cause just buys you a couple of years.
When it is the right choice. Choose repair over a full re-render when failure is localised, the bulk of the elevation is sound, and the cause can be fixed.

Render Repair — your questions
How do I know if my render has blown?
Tap it with your knuckle or a small hammer. Solid render sounds dull and dense; blown render sounds hollow and drummy. Bulging and hairline map-cracking are other signs.
Can blown render be patched or does it all need replacing?
If the failure is localised and the rest is well bonded, patching is the sensible option. Once more than roughly a third of an elevation is hollow, a full re-render usually works out better value.
Will the repair match my existing render?
We colour and texture match as closely as possible, but weathered render never matches fresh render exactly. On a visible front elevation, rendering the full wall gives a cleaner result.
Why did my render fail?
Most commonly water getting in from above — failed gutters, cracked sills, missing bell-cast beads — or an over-strong cement mix on a substrate that moves. We identify the cause as part of the survey.
Do I need planning permission to render my house?
Usually not on a standard house, but you will if the property is listed, in a conservation area, or if rendering would significantly change its appearance. We flag it at survey.
Will you need scaffolding?
For anything above single storey, yes — it is safer and produces a better finish than working off ladders or towers. Scaffold is included and itemised in the quote.
How long before I can paint new render?
Through-coloured systems need no painting at all. Sand and cement should cure for around 28 days before masonry paint goes anywhere near it.
