A chimney stack is the most weather-exposed masonry on a building — hit from every side, above the roofline, with no shelter from driving rain and no protection from frost. It is also the most common single source of unexplained damp patches in upstairs rooms, because water entering a failed stack travels down inside the flue and emerges in a bedroom ceiling a long way from the actual defect.
Rendering a stack weatherproofs it properly, but only alongside the associated work: renewing the flaunching that beds the pots, checking and repairing lead flashings at the roof junction, repointing where mortar has gone, and fitting cowls where flues are redundant. We deal with the whole stack as one job, because rendering a chimney while leaving failed flashings underneath does not stop the water.

Chimney Rendering — your questions
Why is my chimney causing damp?
Water enters through failed flaunching, cracked render, open pointing or defective flashings, then runs down inside the flue and shows as staining on a chimney breast, often on the floor below.
Should a chimney be rendered or repointed?
Repointing suits a stack in reasonable condition. Rendering is better where brickwork has spalled or is badly weathered, as it gives a continuous weatherproof skin.
What is flaunching?
The mortar fillet that beds the chimney pots into the top of the stack and sheds water off it. It cracks and fails with age and is a very common leak point.
Do you need scaffolding for chimney work?
Usually yes, for safe access and to work properly. On some stacks a roof ladder and tower arrangement is sufficient — we confirm at survey.
How long does a rendering job take?
A typical three-bedroom semi is usually one to two weeks on site including scaffold, preparation, application and finishing. Weather, wall condition and the system chosen all move that.
Do I need planning permission to render my house?
Usually not on a standard house, but you will if the property is listed, in a conservation area, or if rendering would significantly change its appearance. We flag it at survey.
Will you need scaffolding?
For anything above single storey, yes — it is safer and produces a better finish than working off ladders or towers. Scaffold is included and itemised in the quote.
