Pebbledash was applied in huge quantities from the 1920s through the 1970s, and most of it is now well past its service life. Stripping it is dusty, noisy and labour-intensive — the dash is mechanically keyed into a strong cement backing and it does not come off easily — but the transformation to a smooth modern render is the single most dramatic change you can make to a house's appearance.
The important stage is what we find underneath. Pebbledash has often been hiding poor brickwork, previous repairs, or damp that was rendered over rather than resolved. We strip a test area at survey stage where possible so the quote reflects reality, then assess the whole substrate once it is exposed and repair brick, block and pointing before any new render goes on.

Can pebbledash be rendered over instead of removed?
Sometimes, if it is completely sound and well-keyed, using a levelling basecoat. But if any of it is blown, covering it just traps the failure — removal is the safer route.
How messy is pebbledash removal?
Very. It is a mechanical strip that produces significant dust and debris. We sheet the working area, protect windows, doors and planting, and clear waste as we go.
What is underneath pebbledash?
Usually a cement backing coat over brick or block. It often conceals older repairs, damaged brickwork or previous damp problems, which is why we assess the substrate before rebuilding.
Is removing pebbledash worth it?
For appearance and resale, it is one of the highest-impact exterior changes available. It also lets you upgrade to a breathable, self-cleaning modern system at the same time.
Do I need planning permission to render my house?
Usually not on a standard house, but you will if the property is listed, in a conservation area, or if rendering would significantly change its appearance. We flag it at survey.
Will you need scaffolding?
For anything above single storey, yes — it is safer and produces a better finish than working off ladders or towers. Scaffold is included and itemised in the quote.
How long before I can paint new render?
Through-coloured systems need no painting at all. Sand and cement should cure for around 28 days before masonry paint goes anywhere near it.
