Garden walls fail faster than house walls and the reason is simple: a house wall gets rain on one face and has a roof over it, while a freestanding garden wall gets weather on both faces and straight down onto the top. Without a proper coping, water enters the top of the wall, saturates the core, freezes and blows the render off in sheets.
So the detailing is the job. We render both faces, fit or renew coping stones with a proper overhang and drip, form a bell-cast at the base so water throws clear rather than tracking down into the ground, and check drainage at the foot of the wall. On retaining walls we also confirm there is working drainage behind the wall, because rendering the face of a retaining wall with water trapped behind it guarantees failure.

Why does render fall off my garden wall?
Almost always water entering the unprotected top of the wall, then freezing. A properly overhanging coping with a drip is the single most important detail.
Should both sides of a garden wall be rendered?
Yes, wherever possible. Rendering one face only lets water in through the other and trap it behind the rendered side.
Can you match the render to my house?
Yes — we match colour and texture so the boundary reads as part of the property rather than an afterthought.
Do retaining walls need special treatment?
Yes. Retaining walls hold back saturated ground, so drainage behind the wall must be working before rendering. Otherwise trapped water pushes the render off.
How long does a rendering job take?
A typical three-bedroom semi is usually one to two weeks on site including scaffold, preparation, application and finishing. Weather, wall condition and the system chosen all move that.
Do I need planning permission to render my house?
Usually not on a standard house, but you will if the property is listed, in a conservation area, or if rendering would significantly change its appearance. We flag it at survey.
Will you need scaffolding?
For anything above single storey, yes — it is safer and produces a better finish than working off ladders or towers. Scaffold is included and itemised in the quote.
