Monocouche Render
One-coat through-coloured mineral render, machine or hand applied, scraped back to a fine even texture.
Monocouche means 'single layer' — a factory-blended white cement, lime and aggregate render that goes on in one 15-20mm pass and provides both the weatherproofing and the decorative finish. It's the default specification on much of the UK new-build market because it is fast, consistent and needs no subsequent decoration.
The characteristic look comes from the scraping stage. Once the render has taken up, roughly a day after application, it's scraped back with a nail float to expose the aggregate and give an even, slightly open texture. That scraping is where the skill sits — timing it too early tears the surface, too late and it won't cut cleanly. It's why monocouche looks superb on a well-run job and patchy on a rushed one.
When it is the right choice. Choose monocouche on new blockwork or a full re-render where you want a mineral, non-plastic finish and a fast single-coat programme.

Monocouche Render — your questions
What is the difference between monocouche and silicone render?
Monocouche is a thick single-coat mineral render; silicone is a thin-coat polymer system over a separate basecoat. Monocouche is more rigid and more traditional in appearance; silicone is more flexible and more resistant to dirt.
Can monocouche render crack?
It can hairline-crack if the substrate moves or if bead and mesh detailing was skipped at stress points. Correct movement joints and mesh at openings prevent almost all of it.
How long does monocouche take to apply?
A typical semi-detached house is three to five days on site including scaffold, beading, application and scraping — weather permitting.
Does monocouche need a basecoat?
No, that is the point of it. It is applied directly to a suitable substrate such as blockwork, though a bonding or key coat may be needed on dense or smooth backgrounds.
