Machine-flicked Tyrolean render giving a fine, honeycombed decorative texture.
Tyrolean is applied with a hand-cranked flicking machine that throws a fine cement-based mix onto the wall in successive passes, building up a distinctive open honeycomb texture. It was extremely common on British housing from the 1960s to the 1980s and remains a practical, economical decorative finish.
Its strengths are cost and forgiveness — the texture disguises minor substrate irregularity that would show through a smooth finish, and it goes onto garage walls, outbuildings and boundary walls quickly. Its weakness is that the open texture holds dirt and organic growth on shaded elevations, so north-facing Tyrolean tends to green up faster than a smooth silicone finish. We still apply it regularly for repairs and matching, and for clients who want the period-correct look.
